Dear PJ,

So it’s YOU I’ve been writing to for all these months… my sweet little boy.

It’s been one week since we welcomed you into this world

You have already changed our lives in a way I can’t describe.

And our love for you is something I can’t find words for.

I stare at you for hours on end…  and yet time has never passed so quickly.

We love you.

Dear Baby,

We had our final ultrasound last week, and along with lots of measurements (you weighed in at 5lbs 14oz!) the tech was excited to point out ‘all the hair you have!”  I couldn’t really tell where she was looking  – bad Momma! – so with the help of the zoom button, she showed me your long locks.

And with a closer look, she noted most of this long hair was on the back of your head, and not much on the top…..:

You have a mullet.

I’m anxious to see how much grows in over the remaining time you’re in my belly, and because I love you, I will have plenty of hats at the ready if you come out all party in the back and business up front.

As reassurance, here’s your Dad heading off to school – with a full head of hair, and sad to leave his new puppy:

Dear Baby,

Over the last month or so, your Dad & I have made it a point to go out to dinner every Friday.  A date night just for us…  we know they will be fewer and further between once you arrive (date lunches will be more like it), and so we’re doing our best to seize the remaining time.

As we were leaving a restaurant last week, something caught his eye, and stopped him in his tracks.  And right there, he proclaimed what will be his most important dating advice for you:

Never sit on the same side of the table when out at a restaurant.

A young couple, squeezed together on the same side of the booth – it drives him crazy, which I find so funny.  Another thing that might drive him crazy?  The fact that someday you will be on an actual date.  More advice, and rules, to follow.   Especially if you’re a girl.

We love you!

Dear Baby,

Over the last 8.5 months we’ve been pretty good about taking weekly photos on our phones, tracking the progress and milestones as the both of us continue to grow.  What we haven’t been good about is taking photos with the real camera… the one I pull out every weekend to document the lives of others, has yet to document ours.  If I’m being honest the main reason for this is vanity; seeing my body change in this way is something that takes getting used to…  I catch a glimpse in the mirror, or a reflection as we’re walking past a store, and do a double take.  You’re growing so much, and so am I.

And as we continue to get closer to your due date, taking these pictures was something that was weighing heavily on my mind.  I just knew someday down the road I would regret not having these to look back on… someday, when everything has gone back to the way it was (which I’m reassured will happen), I would slowly forget what this belly and body really looked like.

So with your Dad behind the camera, and some comical outtakes in front of the tripod, we took a little time to really celebrate everything that’s happening.

This is me.

This is us.

Just a few weeks before you.

Dear Baby,

It’s the 2nd day of a new year!  The one in which we get to meet YOU!

We’ve been counting the weeks until you arrive, and as the days pass by your Dad and I are growing more & more anxious to know whether you’re a boy or a girl!  So many people ask, and I can’t say I have a real intuition one way or the other… it seems to change from day to day.   We have decided on names —  sometimes you’ll kick a lot when we say one, and then you’ll kick a lot when we say the other…  so the simple answer is: you kick a lot, and it’s a 50/50 guess!  Your nursery is just about ready, and baby essentials have taken up space in all corners of our home.  Yet as anxious as we are for your debut, I’ve been doing my best to fully enjoy being pregnant (chocolate milkshakes included!)… trying not to wish it away too quickly.

As 2012 came to an end, your Dad and I decided we wanted a quiet New Year’s Eve… just the two of us, a nice dinner and lots of reminiscing about the last 12 months (and past NYE’s – we’ve had some good ones!).  We had a conversation that I’m sure was similar to those of so many others on the last night of the year:  our favorite memories of 2012.  With what wouldn’t take much guessing, anyone could easily pick our #1:

Finding out about you!

When it came to listing the others (a wide range of big moments and little ones), my runner-up was without a doubt, telling your Grandparents you were on the way.  We waited an excruciatingly long 2 days – ha! – and on the morning of my birthday we told them what yours is expected to be.  Their reactions were priceless and something I will carry with me forever.

In a year full of happiness, I’m amazed that a moment I never gave much thought to before that morning, quickly surpassed all the others before and after it.

So here’s to the big dreams we have for our family, and all the ones we can’t even imagine yet.

 Happy 2013 little one!

We love you.

(*and yes, the first test I took was faulty — had to take a few more for extra measure!)
